Star biscuits with sparkled with icing sugar
Auntie Carolina Star Biscuits

Family recipes have a unique charm. They carry not just flavours but also cherished moments and connections across generations. Auntie Carolina's star biscuits stand out in my family tradition. Passed down from my mother to me, I am now thrilled to share this delightful treat with my children. These timeless star biscuits, bursting with the zesty flavours of lemon and orange alongside the warmth of vanilla, are not just tasty snacks; they embody our family's rich history.

A Taste of Tuscany

Auntie Carolina was from Tuscany and moved to Sardinia after marrying my uncle Francesco, also known as Zio Cicchino. However, she always retained her Tuscan character. Her infectious smile and her knack for making everyone feel welcome were unforgettable. Her recipe for star biscuits also comes from Tuscany. Indeed, these biscuits make you smile with delight when you eat them. The vibrant aroma of the fruit zest fills the air with a promise of sweetness—a memory I hold dear.

Ingredients: Serving 30 Star Biscuits

To create these timeless star biscuits, gather the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg type 00 flour

  • 200 g lard or butter, softened

  • 200 g granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • A pinch of salt

Let's Jump to the Recipe

Start by preheating your oven to 175°C.

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  2. In another bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy. This step is key, as it introduces air, giving the biscuits a tender texture.

  3. Mix in the eggs and vanilla extract thoroughly. The eggs act as a binding agent, while the vanilla enhances the flavour.

  4. Gently fold in the lemon and orange zest.

  5. Add the flour mixture and mix until combined. Transfer the dough to a work surface and knead it with your hands until smooth. Shape it into a ball, cover it with cling film, and refrigerate for 1 hour.

  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 0.8 cm thick. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the biscuits, then place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. During this time, your home will be filled with an irresistible aroma.

  8. Let the biscuits cool on a wire rack before serving. They can be enjoyed plain, with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, or—better yet—with melted chocolate drizzled over the top using a fork.
