Timeless Star Biscuits

Star biscuits with sparkled with icing sugar
Auntie Carolina Star Biscuits

Family recipes have a unique charm. They carry not just flavours, but also cherished moments and connections across generations. Auntie Carolina's star biscuits stand out in my family tradition. Passed down from my mother to me, I'm now thrilled to share this delightful treat with my children. These timeless star biscuits, bursting with the zesty flavours of lemon and orange, alongside the warmth of vanilla, aren't just tasty snacks; they embody our family's rich history.

Auntie Carolina was from Tuscany and moved to Sardinia after married my uncle Francesco, aka zio Cicchino, but she always kept the Tuscan character, her infectious smile and her knack for making everyone feel welcome. Her recipe of star biscuits comes from Tuscany too and indeed these biscuits makes you smile of delight when you eat them. The vibrant perfume from the fruit zest would fill the air with a promise of sweetness, a memory I hold dear.

Ingredients: serving 30 star biscuits

To create these Timeless Star Biscuits, gather these ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg flour type 00

  • 200 g lard or butter, softened

  • 200 g granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • A pinch of salt

These straightforward ingredients blend to bring forth a delightful mix of flavors. The lemon and orange zest adds brightness, while the vanilla lends richness, making these biscuits a standout.

Let's jump to the recipe

Baking these Timeless Star Biscuits is a joyful experience I look forward to sharing with my children. Here’s how to make these delightful treats:

  1. Start by setting your oven to 175°C.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. In another bowl, beat together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This step is key; it introduces air, giving the biscuits a fluffy texture.

  4. Mix in the eggs and vanilla extract thoroughly. The egg acts as a binding agent, while the vanilla enhances flavour.

  5. Fold in the lemon and orange zests gently.

  6. Add to the flour, baking powder, and salt large bowl and whisk together. Tranfer the dough on a cutting bord and work the dough with your hands until smooth. Then, roll it as a ball, cover it with cling film and put it in the fridge for 1 hour..

  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 0.8cm thick. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the biscuits, then place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. During this time, your home will be filled with an irresistible aroma.

  9. Let the biscuits cool on a wire rack before serving. They can be enjoyed plain or with a sprinkle of powdered sugar on top for added sweetness or, even better, with melted chocolate splashed with a fork dents.
